Sunny and sixties surrounded by mountain tops and lush greenery, we arrived in Pierce, Idaho to prepare for mock interviews at the Idaho Youth ChalleNGe Academy.
Youths from 16 to18 stand in formation outside the entryway. As they began their synchronized march to the doors, and so did we. The cadet issuing orders commanded “make a hole” upon seeing us and marching ceased, allowing us entry.
This school offers young people who have faced certain life challenges, and fallen behind in high school courses, the opportunity to catch up in five months’ time. From the long days, five in the morning to nine at night, packed with chores, studies, and physical training, to weekends consumed by volunteer work and activities, it’s no wonder they feel a sense of accomplishment when all is said and done.
In our interviews, a common theme we stumbled across was how very proud these students are of their choice to attend, and the perspective shift they gained as a result. The matter of offering young individuals a clearer understanding of the employment landscape is paramount. These interviews provided an opportunity to encourage adolescents to think critically about their next steps while also giving them vital interview skills. These skills and preparation are lacking in public education according to many on-sight teachers.
Understanding how to begin building their financial house, including the proper use of credit, is only a small piece of the life skills taught here.
We were also provided with the opportunity to tour the facilities with Admissions Coordinator Greg Billups.
